Welcome to the Prairiewinkle Inn located in the heart of downtown Prairie City. Much care has been taken to make this Inn a comfortable and restful spot for your enjoyment. For your comfort, the Prairiewinkle Inn has a Queen-size bed and if needed, a twin bed bed is also available. The Inn has a full size kitchen and provides a washer/dryer, wireless internet, and VCR. Our rates are $70.00-$125.00 per night. The back deck is available for smoking. Please extinguish all butts and dispose of them appropriately. We thank you for not smoking inside the Inn. Prairie City is nestled at the edge of the prairie on the main stem of the John Day River. With its headwaters originating in the Strawberry mountains, the John Day is one of the longest free flowing rivers in the United States. The Steelhead and salmon return yearly to spawn. So make your plans to stay at the Prairiewinkle Inn and explore the John Day Valley.
Experience the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness with over 100 miles of trails. Hike up to the 200 foot waterfall and to the seven pristine alpine lakes. Bring your fishing gear and binoculars. Have a picnic at Strawberry Lake for a beautiful and memorable experience. Magone Lake is another highlight of this area that you may like to discover. Linger and unwind in our authentic western town. Enjoy the historic buildings, unique shops, the Dewitt Museum, hair salons, massage therapists, restaurants, and just friendly folks. In Prairie City you will find a great mechanic, Ingo (who also happens to be a motorcycle enthusiast and metal sculptor), at Prairie City Motors, a video rental shop, a western wear store, antique shops, gifts, coffee shops, banks, the latest fishing and hunting information and licenses at the Visitors Information Center at Prairie Drug and Hardware. Visit Smile Maintenance Dentistry headquarters next door to The Prairiewinkle Inn and say howdy to Dr. Norm DeJong and Melanie Lott DeJong who also are the owners of the Inn. The DeJongs love to share stories and information about Prairie City and Grant County.
Enjoy a stroll around town, enjoy Chuck's Little Diner next door for breakfast or lunch, then head down to Depot Park for a game of horseshoes. There are tennis courts by the Prairie Panthers football field. Our Inn retreat is just minutes from the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness. Be prepared to observe up to 378 kinds of birds, furbearing animals and other creatures including eagles, cranes, elk, black bear, cougar and big horn sheep. Enjoy cycling or mountain biking, antiquing, huckleberry picking, mushrooming, hiking, fishing, snow sports, horseback riding, birding, gold panning or spend the day touring the perimeter of the wilderness area on paved, well maintained roads. We have many mountain bike trails mapped and complete with degree of difficulty and suggestions for your cycling enjoyment. You can choose one of many cycling maps that start and end right in Prairie City. View the Riding Tour Routes for Cyclists and print these maps for later use. There are several mapped rides available. Winter Recreation abounds! We have over 500 miles of groomed trails to enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snow mobiles or ATV's and there is Dixie mountain rope tow about 10 miles east of town for beginner skiers and snowboarders. We're also a short drive from the world renowned Kam Wah Chung Museum and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Fossil Beds.
