Prairie Wood Products
The Prairie Wood Products operation is a modern, computerized stud mill operation. The predominant items produced are 2x4x8 foot studs. The main species produced are Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, and Lodgepole Pine. The Ponderosa Pine lumber from this region of Oregon is very fine grained and soft textured. It is considered by many users to be among the best available in North America for use in manufacturing operations that produce windows, doors, cabinetry and other high visibility end uses.
These studs are precision end trimmed to requested specifications. After being trimmed, each stud is end branded with our "PWP" logo and then both ends are sealed with a hot wax process prior to being unitized for shipment. In addition, smaller volumes of 2x2, 2x3, and 2x6 studs are available. Also 4, 5, 6 and 7 foot lengths in the above sizes develop as a natural by-product of the 8 foot stud production. The Douglas Fir, which comprises one half of the mill's production, is custom cut to the customer's specifications. Among the items being cut, you will commonly find Export Clears, Scaffold Plank, Timbers and Beams, Ship Building Grades, Merchantable Grades, plus numerous other specialty items for both the domestic and export markets. Most of the Douglas Fir production is sold green, even though the mill does have dry kilns.
For those customers specifying green we do have have anti-stain treatment available. Paper and burlap wrapping is also available. Most of the Douglas Fir is red-end sealed and compression packaged for unitized shipment. Shipments are available direct from the mill at Prairie City by truck, or by Union Pacific Railroad from our company owned loading center, at nearby Baker City, Oregon. The equipment and volume has changed over the years, but the commitment of serving our customers has not. Production starts with the best obtainable Douglas Fir, Sugar Pine, and Ponderosa Pine logs available from southwestern Oregon forests. |
